The Gym is a new contemporary performance space in the Arts Centre of Christchurch. The name reflects the original use of the building as the Gymnasium for Christchurch Boy’s High School. Before the earthquakes the building housed the Academy Cinema. Post-earthquakes, the building has been stripped back to its original form and strengthened for contemporary use. Free Theatre Christchurch is the resident company, providing a central New Works and Education Programme. Around the Free Theatre works, the space is programmed for festivals and events (Arts Circus). The Gym is an exciting destination, presenting dynamic new work that is unique to Christchurch but reminiscent of cutting-edge contemporary arts spots in city’s known for a thriving cultural scene and social life. Drawing together artists from different disciplines and diverse audiences, young and old, The Gym responds to and imagines a new contemporary Christchurch.
